Toni Yuly has been an early bird her whole life and loves to start the day in her studio listening to other early birds sing outside her window. How apropos then that she is the author and illustrator of picture book, Early Bird, her debut, which was an ALA Notable book, and received the Texas 2x2 award. Her book Thank You Bees was selected as a Notable Book in the children's category of the Sigurd F. Olson Nature Writing Award. And both Bees and Cat Nap were selected for the Society of Illustrators Original Art Show. Her The Whole Wide World and Me received a starred review from Kirkus who noted its “Eye-catching, perspective-shifting illustrations pair beautifully with simple text to embrace a child's world”.
Toni’s style is influenced by Eastern sensibilities which she fell in love with during a year spent in Sendai, Japan when she was 17 years old. She graduated from the University of Washington with a BFA in Painting where she studied with the great American painter, Jacob Lawrence. Now, after many years as a librarian in the King County Library System, Toni works full-time as a designer, artist, and writer, and lives in a small house by the water in Bremerton, WA, a short ferry boat ride from Seattle, where she was born.
